The campaign continues....

Ahoy hoy,

played another 4 campaign games last night at vets. Suprisingly I'm still on a lucky streak. I managed to win another 2 games and draw the other 2 so thus far I'm still undefeated :-D

my record so far is W:4/L:0/D:2 and I intend to build on it next week.

That's all for now, catch y'all laters

Campaign Time

Aloha,

This week at Vets Night, the latest 40k store campaign kicked off. It's called "Pawns of the Laughing God" and it's just a bit of fun.

The whole premise of the campaign has been devised by one of the staffers at the store, Shaun, but as of yesterday, he'd not actually finished the campaign packs so we all started off a bit "blind" so to speak.

I don't really know what the actual aims of the campaign are yet but I will tell you that there are some fun modifiers added to the games which are divvied out as such. Basically, once mission type and deployment have been done and initiatives have been seized (or not), the player who will eventually get first turn rolls 2D6. The result of this roll corresponds to one of the modifiers that Shaun devised such as +1KP for killing your opponent's HQ, or a scout move for your whole army etc.

Anyways, to begin with we all put together 500pt lists. Mine was as follows: -

Avatar
8 Dire Avengers with Exarch upgrade and Bladestorm
5 Rangers
3 Guardian Jetbikes with a Shuriken Cannon
Vyper with Shuriken Cannon

I thought it might be a bit beardy taking a monstrous creature at 500pts but then I figured that the guard players could fit a sizable amount of armour into 500pts so I didn't feel too beardy :D

I played my first game against Jake and to be honest I wasn't expecting to win as Jake is a very good player. We rolled annihilation/pitched battle and set up. However, things seemed to go my way yesterday. I won the roll off and he failed to seize the initiative so I got to roll on the modifier chart. I rolled an 8 and luckily got to scout move my whole army. This was ace for me as it meant that I could get my jetbikes behind his lines in the first turn. Yay!

Anyway, after a poor round of shooting on my part, Jake moved forward. At this point he decided it would be a good idea to deffrolla my vyper. And it was, bye bye Vyper :(

My next turn and the Avatar got stuck into the battlewagon. He couldn't hit it for toffee with the wailing doom but did the business in combat, immobilising it. Jake them fixed it in his turn with his Mek. I then shivved it again in my next turn and so it went on until I finally popped it completely. Da boyz then piled out and decided to 'av a propa go wiv dere choppas.

Anyhoo, the Avatar beat them down and the Mek too and finally made them run away. All the while the rest of my forces took care of the mopping up in the preceding rounds of shooting (poor grots).

All in all I won 4-1, my only losses being the squished vyper and 2 wounds off the Avatar. Not too shabby :D

The second game I played was against Elliot and his nids. Man was I glad I had the Avatar as he rocked up with a tyrant and a fex! He went first and rolled the same modifier as me, scout move for the army. Bugger.

After an ineffectual round of shooting on the nids part, I had my go. I took out a few gaunts and moved the big fella forward but that was about it.

More dodgy shooting from the nids then it was combat time. The gaunts got up close and personal with the jetbikes. I lost one, no biggy as the squad was within 12 of the Av and so were fearless. My go led to picking off a few more gaunts with the Vyper and taking the Av forward and missing with the wailing doom again. D'oh!

I lost a second jetbike to the gaunts but they were still fearless so again no biggy. Elliot then had a pop at the Av with the his tyrant and fex. Cue a silly amount of TL devourer shots heading my way. I failed 1 save and went down to 3 wounds. He then charged them both at me. I went first and directed everything at the tyrant and bitch slapped it. 1-0 to me. The fex had a go and fluffed his attacks. My 1 remaining jetbike managed to kill 1 lowly gaunt and then make them run away. I caught them though and wiped them out. Gotta love sweeping advances :D

The remainder of the turns were pretty boring, i thinned out the other squad of gaunts with massed shuriken fire from the vyper and avengers while the Av and fex had at each other. Finally the Av won through with 1 wound left and I won 4-0.

I'll admit I was quite smug for the rest of the night but I won't apologise as I don't win very often at all so I think I deserve to be smug for a night :D

TABLED!!

Ok, so it's Tuesday and as usual it was time for my weekly visit to GW for vets night.

Now I generally attend with the intention of winning at least one game (not that I ever do win) and tonight was no exception.

I played a 1k point game against Jake's orks with my Sallies to start and things were going well for me for the first few turns. We were playing annihilate and I sucessfully managed to barbeque my way through one of his boyz squads. Then in a tactical error on my part, I spent one turn too many chasing his warboss and his bodyguard around with my redeemer which led to my eventual defeat of 4-1 to Jake on kill points.

I then played a 1.5k point game against Steve, again using my Sallies against his eldar. I wrote up a list amid the seemingly constant "suggestions" from another dude who was spectating. This kind of thing gets on my nerves sometimes, especially when they suggest taking units I clearly don't own or even have anything that could easily proxy them. Anyhoo, I digress.

We rolled for capture and control and off we went. Things started ok for me but by the 3rd turn it was clear that I was going to get completely screwed.

I play against and ally with Steve regularly, and I know his tactics well but today all the fun seemed to be sucked out of the game for me. He's not a beard or a cheese player by any means, quite the opposite in fact. It's just that there's only so many squads and rhinos you can lose to dark reapers and vibrocannons before you start thinking "WTF?! why am I even bothering?" you know? I'm not blaming Steve at all but it was a little dejecting for me. It's weird though as it's not as if I've not been tabled before.

Anyway, I don't think I've ever been so glad to finish a game as I was tonight. Not to worry though, I'll bounce back and be ready to do it all again next week! :D

G'night!

Rugby & psykers

Hi all,

it's been a while since I posted last so I'll fill you in with what I've been up to.

Firstly, I took my girlfriend for a suprise visit to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff over the weekend to watch my beloved Welsh rugby team give the Argentinians a proper thrashing in the penultimate game of the autumn series.

I managed to get us brilliant seats on the bottom tier of the stadium, right on the halfway line. She absolutely loved it as she'd never seen a live game before, but her mood soured slightly when we found out that her beloved national side, England, got screwed by the All Blacks.

Needless to say, that made my day even sweeter as there's nothing better for a proud welshman like myself to hear than England lost a game of rugby :D

Secondly, I've been working on, and finished my new seer for my Yme-loc warhost. I have to say that this particular seer is one of my favourite sculpts in the current eldar range. I was quite lucky getting hold of him actually as you normally have to by the box set to get him, however I managed to get mine off Jake when he gave up eldar in favour of his orks.

So without further ado, here he is.

Business banking and scratch-building

Afternoon everyone, hope all is good.

Quite a productive week this week. Apart from my abyssmal gaming record (calamari beat me again on Thursday. TWICE! :'( ), I've started to really get down to sorting out the business.

I went to see the dreaded bank manager about sorting the business account out and to my complete and utter suprise, it was the least painful experience I've ever had in a bank.

I spoke to a nice lady in Abbey called Faye who basically told me to come and see her next week with ID, a bill and a cheque for 50 quid and she'd sort everything else out for me. Bargain!

I've also been raiding the bitz box this week too and I've started putting together a few bits and pieces for my own armies.

Firstly, I've begun work on a Deathwatch librarian in power armour for my marines. He won't be on his own though, once I've got some spare cash, I'll be getting some tactical or assault marines to convert up into Deathwatch troopers that'll be counts-as sternguard. I'm leaning towards the assault box as they'll allow me to give the deathwatch guys some more dynamic posing.

Secondly, I've started scratchbuilding a long-range autarch for my warhost. Basically I've given him a tempest launcher and the plan is to stick him with a squad of reapers or pathfinders. I'm hoping having him plus the snipers guarding an objective will cause MEQ armies to think twice before venturing too close!

There is a slight problem with these conversions at the moment though. Neither of them have any legs as I'm waiting for my order to arive from bitsandkits.

Anyhoo, enjoy the rest of your Friday.

Pwned :'(

As predicted, I got pwned as usual at vet's night.

I didn't get round to having a rematch with Jake this week, but I did manage to grab a 1500pt game against another mate, Steve.

We had a bit of an eldar showdown, as is generally the norm when we play each other. We rolled for mission type/deployment and drew capture & control and table quarters. I won the roll off and Steve failed to steal the initiative so off we went.

My turn 1 was pretty uneventful in that i managed to kill 5 avengers and that was it. Steve managed to wipe out my pathfinders, who were camping on the objective, with one shot from his reaper exarch (bastard) and then mullered my support platforms with his war walkers. D-cannons no less. D-CANNONS!!! 2 OF THEM!!! :(

So that pretty much scuppered my plans to d-cannon his banshees as they made their way towards me in their transports. Needless to say, things went from bad to worse rather rapidly and my fate was sealed.

On the upside though, I did manage to bitch-slap his autarch with my own and my wraithlord barbequed and butchered his way thorough a squad of banshees. It was still a pretty crushing defeat though.

Ah well, there's always next week to redeem myself.....

It's that time of the week again...

OK kids, it's Tuesday so it's vet's night at GW.

Time to go and try to finally beat Jake's orks. Well, wish me luck!

One more for the WAAAAAAAAGH!! and spiky nids...

Okey dokey, a few things today. First off, I spent all morning taking photos for the website. You can check out my efforts here if anyone's interested.
Secondly, and most importantly, here's some pics of the AoBR Warboss that my buddy Jake (aka calamari, check out his blog of greenskinned goodness here!) commissioned. Actually, he didn't really commission it, I offered to paint him up to say thanks for the mountain of Eldar bits he gave me the other week. Anyways, without further ado, here he is!

I also started to clean up another few bits and pieces of a niddy nature for another friend. A lictor in fact. Except the bastard is VERY, VERY SPIKY!

I mean the damn thing is so spiky it's difficult to grab hold of it properly in order to get filing without impaling yourself on something :(

Despite this though, it's still one of the best sculpts in the tyranid range IMO.

Anyhoo, back to it I guess.

Website Progress

OK, so I spent most of this evening trying to sort the bones of the PFS website out. Still a lot to do, but it's getting there :D

Sorted out a flickr account for my pics so tomorrow's job is to get photographing all of my minis.

Anyhoo, bedtime methinks.

Welcome

Welcome to the official Paint Forge Studios blog!

Hopefully over the coming months as I get the business up and running I'll be making regular posts about commissions I'm doing, games I've had and random musings about life in general.

Anyhoo, back to the painting table. No rest for the wicked I guess....
